Mechanics and Analysis of Advanced Materials and Structures

The acoustic emission technique (AET) is one of the powerful non-destructive techniques to diagnose the deformation status of solid objects. Acoustic waves propagate through solids as elastic waves. By examining the elastic wave signals in time- or frequency-domain, or by analyzing the characteristic feature of the waveform, we can diagnose various information on material properties, such as the deformation status, of the test object.

Although the concept of AET has been known for the last five decades, the efficient use of the technique is still in debate. This Webinar discusses various signal processing and analytic techniques such as the Principal Component Analysis and other feature identification techniques used in the neural network method. On the application side, we discuss various case studies, such as in-situ monitoring of ancient artworks. Recent advancement of time-domain spectroscopy in the terahertz frequency range for inspection of architectural art and building structures is another topic of interest.

Sanichiro Yoshida received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Keio University, Japan, in 1980 and 1986, respectively. In 1981 - 1982, he received basic training on conducting scientific research from Dr. Author V. Phelps at the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA. He has conducted experimental and theoretical research on various topics, such as developments and applications of high-power lasers, precise measurement with optical interferometry, optical and acoustic characterization of material strength, and deformation and fracture of solids. In the last 20 years, his research interest has been mainly in developing a comprehensive theory of deformation and fracture of solids. Currently, he works at Southeastern Louisiana University as a Professor of Physics.

Bio
He has been Associate Professor in Structural Mechanics at the Department of Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering (DISEG), Politecnico di Torino, Torino (Italy) since January 2011. He received his PhD degree in Structural Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in 1994, where he graduated cum Laude in Architecture in 1985.

Claudia Barile has been a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanics, Mathematics and Management at the Politecnico di Bari since April 2017. She achieved her Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Magna cum laude in July 2008 at the Politecnico di Bari. She received her PhD title on February 2012 in Advanced Production Systems at the Politecnico di Bari. Her research activities are mainly focused on the mechanical characterization of materials (composites, metals, polymers) with both traditional and innovative experimental techniques.

On Wednesday, 10 November 2021, MDPI and the Journal Materials organized their 6th webinar entitled "Mechanics and Analysis of Advanced Materials and Structures".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Sanichiro Yoshida from the Department of Chemistry and Physics, Southeastern Louisiana University, in the USA. In this webinar the Principal Component Analysis, the acoustic emission technique and other techniques used in the neural network method for materials analysis research were covered.

In the first speech of Dr. Giuseppe Lacidogna, from Geotechnical and Building Engineering (DISEG), Politecnico di Torino, in Italy, he presented the Advanced NDT Techniques to Analyse Damage Signals Generated by Transmission or Reception on Monumental Masonry Buildings.

The second and final talk was presented by Dr. Claudia Barile, from Dipartimento di Meccanica, Matematica e Management, Politecnico di Bari, in Italy. In this presentation the focus was on Acoustic Emission Testing in Materials Characterization.

The presentations were followed by a Q&A and a discussion, moderated by the Chair. The webinar was offered via Zoom and required registration to attend.
